One thing I’ve learned after years in pest control is that rodent control isn’t just about putting out bait. Every inspection is different, and sometimes it’s the little things that explain why rats or mice aren’t taking the bait.
I was recently doing an attic inspection in Delta where the bait had been sitting untouched. At first glance, you might think the bait wasn’t working, but after looking around, I noticed the area was covered in old spider webs, along with dust and other debris that hadn’t been disturbed for quite some time.
Now, there’s no solid scientific evidence that rats avoid spider webs specifically, but from what I’ve seen over the years, heavy webs, loose insulation fibres, dust, and even human hair can make an area less appealing for rodents to travel through.
Rats Like Familiar Routes
Rats are naturally cautious. They like to stick to the same travel paths where they feel safe. They also rely heavily on their whiskers to navigate. If they’re pushing through sticky spider webs or tangled debris, they’ll often look for an easier route instead.
That’s why I never assume bait is the problem if it hasn’t been touched.
Before You Blame the Bait
When I inspect a property, I’m looking at the whole picture, not just the bait station.
Some of the things I check include:
- Spider webs, dust, and debris around the bait.
- Where the rats are actually travelling.
- Other food sources they may have access to.
- Whether the bait is in the right location.
- Seasonal changes in rodent activity.
Sometimes a small adjustment to the placement or cleaning up the surrounding area is all it takes to get much better results.
It’s About More Than Bait
This is exactly why I use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at Go Green Pest Control. Throwing bait around isn’t a long-term solution. The key is figuring out why the rodents are there, how they’re getting in, and what they’re doing once they’re inside.
Every inspection includes looking for entry points, identifying travel routes, finding food and water sources, and choosing the best locations for traps or bait. No two homes are the same, so every treatment plan is a little different.
The Little Things Matter
One thing I enjoy about this job is that every inspection teaches you something. Something as simple as a few old spider webs can tell you an area hasn’t been active for a while—or that rodents are choosing a completely different route.
That’s why experience matters. It’s often the small details that make the biggest difference when solving a rodent problem.
