Health officials report that fleas collected have tested positive for Yersinia Pestis plague in the parts of the US. Risk of exposure to this serious disease which can be present in fleas, rodents, rabbits and predators that feed upon these animals. The disease can be spread to humans and other animals by the bite of an disease-ridden flea or by direct contact with an infected animal. People should also avoid rodent burrows and keep dogs on a leash. Symptoms generally appear within six days following exposure and include the following:  fever, chills, headache, weakness, and muscle pain. Fire Ants Season is back!

Fire ants can inflict painful stings and create unattractive mounds in your landscapes and there is no know treatment that will eliminate them from a yard forever rather you will have to control them as required. A variety of products and methods can be used against fire ants including baits, dusts, granular applications and organic controls including home remedies. Home remedies include pouring boiling water into the ant hill, this may kill 75% of the ants but will likely kill any grass and plants near the scalding treatment. Do not use gasoline to control fire ant control, yes it will kill the ants but this attempt is dangerously flammable and will kill grass and other plants, and pollute the soil. As a side note, fire ants are outstanding predatory insects, and yards with these guys usually have less insects such as fleas, chinch bugs and borers.

Does the Virus come from a Raccoon?

Virologists believe other animal species other than bats can be intermediate hosts of the new coronavirus Covid 19. The newer suspect is a raccoon dog or a crawl cat (breeding of raccoon dogs is a huge industry in China). The first transmissions from animals to humans are said to have taken place at an animal market in Wuhan and a conspiracy theory hypothesis is that an accident in a Chinese research laboratory could have caused the global pandemic. Because of their fur, the raccoon dogs are bred commercially.

COVID-19 Pandemic make Pest Control Essential

Many businesses and organisations are supplying a wide range of products and services that are needed to keep all sectors of society running during this pandemic, but many non essential businesses have shut down operation, leaving the proverbial door open to infestations of pests . Many common pests (rodents, flies, cockroaches, birds, stored product insects, fleas and ticks) are vectors of diseases and contaminates, in fact over 55 pathogenic bacteria, viruses, protozoa and helminths. Empty buildings provide a picture-perfect harbourage for pests to shelter and breed, damaging many parts of buildings to gain access and get around buildings to find food and nesting places. Businesses should adopt a thorough pest control program to protect their buildings from pests to enable operations to be started again as soon as possible after restrictions are lifted.

Bed Bugs? Fleas? Or Carpet beetle Larvae!!

Carpet beetles can be an annoyance in your home. Only the larvae feed on fabric eating their way through rugs, clothes and furniture. They can also sometimes cause an allergic reaction. Their larvae, the young carpet beetles, are 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, and are a tan brownish. They’re covered with bristles and shed their skin as they grow. Some people can be allergic to larvae bristles or skin that’s been shed causing itchy skin, rashes, which looks like welts or bites that a bed bug or fleas can give you, and may cause a burning sensation and hives. The symptoms of an allergic reaction will go away once the carpet beetles and their shed skin are eliminated from your home.

The Scorpion Fly

These flies are called scorpion flies because their enlarged abdomen resemble a scorpion’s tail and stinger. They lives near but not in water and needs moist, cool habitats to breed and develop. They spend most of their lives hanging on leaves and branches, looking for insect prey. In spite of its alarming looks, they don’t bite or sting humans as their not venomous. Scorpion flies do not cause harm or damage to homes. Interestingly, females select their partners based on gift offerings of prey.

Composts are now becoming buffets for rats. So far, there are no reported cases of rats or mice spreading the novel coronavirus, but rodents can spread approximately 55 diseases to humans either directly through contact or indirectly. Rodents are vectors for disease, everything from salmonella to food poisoning and their fur can also carry bacteria and their droppings can trigger asthma attacks. So avoid attracting rats and mice to their property so give us a call and we’ll help protect you and your property.

Covid 19 Transmitted by Bat, Rodents and Primates

Coronaviruses generally have a varied range of host animals but bats, rodents and primates have the greatest risk of transmitting pathogens to humans. Just being in contact with one of these creatures can cause a virus to spread. Its us humans that drive these virus outbreaks causing are own problems and we enable the mixing of these varied animal species, both animal and domestic. We do this by keeping wild animals as pets or in zoos, as well as, live animal markets that sell wildlife i.e. wet markets (in Wuhan where animals were traded is the epicenter of COVID-19). Bats, primates and rodents are host to a higher number of zoonotic viruses, and they are the highest risk to us.

Neophobic Rats are coming to Town

As Delta’s rats face a growing food shortage, with the closure of restaurants and the lack of foot traffic in popular areas, this will have a severe impact on rats. Rats can be neophobic, ( having an extreme or irrational dislike of anything new or unfamiliar) meaning that those traps you set and that poison you laid out probably won’t work very well. Rats reproduce at a incredible rate, mating over 15 times in 8 hours and producing eight litters of 6-8 rats yearly. Long-term effects of starvation on these rats means an increase in hostile behavior and more interest in getting into homes. A food shortage on rat populations can result in various results. First, they will begin to attack each other for food, then they will begin to disperse, traveling kilometers in search for food and finally if they don’t find food they will die, or begin to invade more homes.

Getting Rid of House Mice

Mice aren’t just annoying, they are disease carrying rodents. A single mice can produce over a hundred offspring in a year and just think off the multiplier when the babies begin breeding. If you are using snap traps, stick pads and poison, all these are not enough to getting rid of those cute adorable mice. The next three steps include sealing off the entry points into the house, cleaning up and decontaminating the house. Mice can squeeze through a gap as small as 6 mm, so if you actually measure 6 mm next to the gap under a door, you’ll see how small it really is. So you need to seal off the cracks, gaps and holes throughout your house. Mice are also attracted to your home because of food crumbs, dry stored products and cotton. So keep food in metal containers or thick plastic containers with tight lids. Every where a mouse has been needs to be decontaminate, surfaces cleaned with bleach solution and all clothing washed, and furniture, rugs and carpet need to be commercial steam cleaned.
