Finding fleas in your home can be frustrating, especially when you don’t know where they came from. Fleas can get into a clean home just as easily as a dirty one. Dogs and cats are a common source, picking them up from grass, parks, other animals or wildlife. Rodents and wildlife around your property can also bring fleas close to your home.

Where Do Fleas Hide?

Fleas don’t just live on your pet. Their life cycle includes eggs, larvae, pupae and adults, and much of the infestation can be hidden in the home.

Eggs can fall from pets into carpets, pet beds, furniture and cracks along floors or baseboards. The pupae are especially difficult because they are protected inside a cocoon. This is why you may still see fleas after the first treatment.

Look for fleas and flea dirt around:

  • Pet beds and blankets
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Furniture
  • Baseboards and cracks
  • Under furniture
  • Areas where pets sleep

How to Get Rid of Fleas

Getting rid of fleas usually requires treating both the pet and the home.

Treat your pets: Talk to your veterinarian about an appropriate flea treatment for all pets in the house. A flea comb can also help remove adult fleas.

Vacuum regularly: Vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture, baseboards and pet sleeping areas. Empty the vacuum outside if possible.

Wash bedding: Wash pet bedding, blankets and other washable materials regularly. Heavily infested bedding may need to be replaced.

Treat the home: Because eggs, larvae and pupae can be hidden throughout the house, treating only the adult fleas you see may not solve the problem. Professional treatment can help target areas where fleas are developing.

Be patient: Fleas can be stubborn. New adults may emerge from previously hidden pupae after treatment, so follow-up treatment and continued vacuuming may be needed.

Preventing Fleas From Coming Back

Keep up with your pets regular flea prevention as recommended by your veterinarian, and continue washing bedding and vacuuming regularly. Also keep an eye on rodents and wildlife around your property, since they can carry fleas.

Remember, having fleas doesn’t mean your home is dirty. They are very good at finding their way inside and hiding where you don’t see them.
