Ticks live well in both warm and cold weather. Ticks carry Lyme disease that is 10 times higher then reported because the signs and symptoms are not always easy to identify. The disease can affect more than one organ including the nervous system, the brain, gastrointestinal system, the heart, muscles and the joints. Mice and deer are carriers of ticks that are most active during both the fall and winter seasons in gardens, landscape plantings, backyard grasses and heavy wooded areas. So who is responsible for pest control, the tenant, the landlord, or the property management company? The answer is usually or should be found within your rental agreement and the cost of these services are most likely included in the cost of the rental. Some times, a landlord or property manager may pay for the first pest control application with continued treatments being made the responsibility of the tenant. Cockroaches are destructive, disease-ridden, messy, stress producing, and really hard to get rid of. You don’t even know you have them until it’s a full blown infestation. They hang around dark and damp areas like under the refrigerator, under the sink, behind the stove, bathroom and kitchen cabinets, closets and shelves. They can live for months without food but only days without water, so finding leaky plumbing is a start. Next, clean the house so it is spotless, top to bottom spotless, including behind all appliances. Homemade or store bought cockroach baits and insecticides are a good start to reducing the infestation but the bottom line is you need a pro to get the job done to completion.

Mice are very cunning and rather difficult to catch, and there is normally not just one but several. Even baited snap traps don’t always work as often the following day the bait is gone and there’s no mouse in the trap. Other then snap tarps and sticky pads, there are other ways of catching mice, even catching them live to release outdoors many kilometers away. You need to make sure that they don’t come right back in through the previous entryway by searching for the hole and blocking it off. Locating and eliminating the food and breeding source is the key to a long-term solution for flies that can impact our health. Here are some interesting facts:

– House flies can walk upside down.

– Flies are able to see behind themselves.

– The lifespan of a house fly about a month long, but a female can lay over 500 eggs in the short time.

– A house fly only lives for around 30 days.  

– House flies have amazing reaction times processing around 250 images in a single second.

– Male house flies have a specific region within their eye called the “love spot” that stays locked onto potential mates during aerial pursuit.

– Fly population under the right circumstances can go from 1 to 65,000,000 in 30 days.   

So where are all those bugs go in winter, being cold-blooded insects are particularly vulnerable to cold temperatures. They have several different ways of surviving through the year’s coldest months: migration, hibernation and overwintering. A lot of crop pests migrate to warmer temperatures in the winter and return in the spring. Many insects hibernate through the winter months, but it only the  adult such as bees, lady bugs, wasps, cockroaches, and some butterflies. And finally, some bugs in certain stages of their lifecycle (larvae, nymphs, pupae, or eggs) can overwinter through the cold months.

When looking for termites you should look for termite wings, straight antennae, dead termites and worm-like mud tunnels that are visible on the surface of walls. They are commonly found by doors, window frames, walls, and baseboards. If Covid isn’t at the top of your concerns while traveling, bed bugs sure should be when staying at a hotel or a rented room. Bed bugs live off blood as their only source of food. Female bed bugs need blood to produce eggs and to mature through several stages in their life. Beds and couches are the areas they hang out in, so the first thing you want to check is the bed linens looking for small blood stains or bed bug feces which will look like tiny brown dots. It’s imperative to do a systematic search through all the creases in the linen and the mattress/box spring itself. Some other areas where these pests hide are the nightstands, behind the headboard, closets and furniture near the bed.
