In B.C we have two native squirrels, the Red squirrels and Douglas squirrels and the other invasive or alien grey/black squirrel. Squirrels, be it red, grey, black or brown are ingenious, frisky and unlike many mammals they tend not to hibernate. Their role in nature is to move seeds and nuts around the forest to diversify it. A squirrel needs to eat about a half a kilo of food a week, so if the seeds, cones, and berries aren’t enough then its your bird feeder or plants that they will attack. Keeping them out of your yard sometimes requires ingenious tactics that are at everyone’s disposal. Squirrels will avoid certain items such as alliums and daffodils, chicken manure, bone meal, coyote and dog urine. They have a few enemies including crows, owls, hawks, eagles, foxes, coyotes, cats and the occasional human.
