Parade is a highlight of Ladner May Days, a highlight of Ladner Pioneer May Days, the colourful parade made its way through Ladner Village noon on Sunday May 26th. The parade features all kinds of entries, including community and school groups, dance teams, entertainers, local businesses and more. The procession starts on Delta Street near Trenant Street, heading south on Delta Street before turning left on 48th Avenue. It will make a right on Elliott Street and then another right on 47th Avenue as it makes its way to the fairgrounds at Memorial Park.

Okay I know its not just me, is there a billion sowbugs out there now! Of course they go by several other names: woodlouse, woodlice, pill bugs, roly polies, doodle bugs and of course wood bugs. Despite their name they are not really bugs, they are land-bound crustaceans. Sowbugs feed on organic material and flourish in humid surroundings, typically coming into homes through ground-level doors. They also make their way into garages or damp basements through cracks in the foundation. They will live in the soil of houseplants and don’t actually do any damage, they are merely a nuisance. If they are found indoors that usually indicates a large population outside. The best way to prevent sowbugs is eliminating their hiding places, so clean up stack firewood by keeping it off of the ground, check downspouts to be sure they drain away from the foundation, seal cracks and holes around exterior doors and windows by replacing weather stripping and door sweeps, and use a dehumidifier to reduce dampness.

Now that summer is almost upon us and ant season is in full swing, nothing starts a conversation faster than the topic of fire ants and how to get rid of them. That’s because these tiny red or black ants are not only a nuisance but they’re also ferocious and hostile aggressors. If fire ants feel their nest is in trouble, they’ll usually will move the nest to another part of the yard but not before they attack with a painful sting – causing welts or even an allergic reaction. So what is the best cure to get rid of these nasty ants. Well there are two different steps : broadcasting a bait product and treating their ant mounds with a faster acting treatment. The first step involves broad-casting a bait formulated insecticide in areas where there are many mounds, this involves treating the ant mounds at least once a year. The second step is to wait several days after applying the bait and then treating the ant colonies using an individual mound treatment method that should provide ant relief for 2 to 6 months.

A giant Japanese hornet was discovered here in the lower mainland which is thought to have arrived on a container ship from Asia. It is extremely dangerous to both humans and bees. The Japanese giant hornet is one of the world’s largest hornets, growing longer than 4 centimeters. Japanese giant hornet workers forage for a wide range of insects, including crop pests, so the hornets are regarded as very valuable. The workers dismember the bodies of their prey returning with the most nutrient-rich body parts. The workers chew the prey into a paste before feeding the larvae – which in return produce a fluid consumed by the workers. Once a Japanese giant hornet has located a honey bee hive, it can kill forty bees per minute, while a group of 30 hornets can destroy an entire hive containing 30,000 bees in a couple hours. They are very aggressive if incited and its venom attacks the nervous system and damages the tissue of its victims. Being stung is extremely painful and can require hospitalization.

Insects often learn fairly rapidly, but the levels of performance is not that high. Logical reasoning is complicated activity, and was thought to be only found in animals with multifaceted nervous arrangements. It recently has been determined that non-solitary wasps use logical deduction, the only case in invertebrates. This kind of intellectual reasoning is called transitive inference (the ability to derive a relationship) – is what we do effortlessly. Because wasps are social creatures they have evolved this ability as they spend a lot of time building their dominant positions and transitive inference help to build these relationships. The wasps were able to organize information into an understood hierarchy  while honey bees don’t have a dominance hierarchies and use a simpler process called deduction processes.

Lately, a new variation of a regular household pest has been identified, the grey long tailed silverfish (Ctenolepisma longicaudata). Although they are often found in modern buildings they are showing up at many residential homes. Similar to our regular silverfish, they are somewhat larger, bushier and have extended tail filaments. They may be an announce but cause minute damage in homes. The grey long tailers consume anything containing polysaccharides  (a carbohydrate like starch, cellulose, or glycogen) including book bindings, carpet, clothing, glue, water based paints, paper, photos, sugar, flour and various porridges. These new silverfish are better crawlers and are more widespread in the home and very difficult to eradicate.

May is the peak season for allergy sufferers and is the Allergy Awareness Month. About 2.5 million Canadians suffer from allergies, or about 7.5 per cent of the population or 1 in 13. Many people think allergies are associated to the sensitivity to pollen and grass but there are a lot of other things indoors that trigger allergies as well. Household pests including mice, rats, bed bugs, cockroaches, mites and many more can aggravate allergy symptoms, particularly in children. Therefore controlling household pests is very important to stop possible reactions. One study found 95 percent of allergists thought a clean pest-free home was important in preventing allergy symptoms. To insure the air in your house is fresh and clean make sure your house is pest free.

The Gypsy moth caterpillar consume tremendous amounts of leaf material in the spring, as much as one square foot of leaves per day. A solution to the Gypsy moth problem emerged in Europe in 1938, where they began to use B.T.K. (Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki) on forests and agricultural lands as a biological insecticide to exterminate the gypsy moth . B.T.K. is a naturally occurring bacteria the soil. In North American, it wasn’t until the 1970s that B.T.K. was used to eradicate the caterpillar on millions of hectares of forest. Apparently it is very low risk to humans, animals, birds and fish. B.T.K. effects caterpillars yet doesn’t harm bees, lady beetles, ants or parasitic wasps. It is applied either by helicopters, small planes or by ground application, usually in April and May when the gypsy moth caterpillars hatch and begin to feed. When the caterpillars munch the vegetation, the B.T.K. consumed activates in their digestive system and is fatal within hours.

Different parasitoid wasp species are know to lay their eggs on a spider’s back and by inoculating the spider with the a molting hormone, the wasp induces the spider to make a distinct web for the wasp’s cocoon. The parasitic wasp forces the spider to texture a special web to dangle the wasp cocoon just before it kills the spider. The zombification includes changing web-spinning designs by taking over the spider hormone.  The spider’s web construction changes from choosing a site to adjusting numerous designs that effect the shelter and home for its cocoon. The spider’s brain is altered with psychotropic chemicals that the spider’s circulatory system delivers. After eating the spider, this young wasp hangs from the spider’s molting web.
