Neophobic Rats are coming to Town

As Delta’s rats face a growing food shortage, with the closure of restaurants and the lack of foot traffic in popular areas, this will have a severe impact on rats. Rats can be neophobic, ( having an extreme or irrational dislike of anything new or unfamiliar) meaning that those traps you set and that poison you laid out probably won’t work very well. Rats reproduce at a incredible rate, mating over 15 times in 8 hours and producing eight litters of 6-8 rats yearly. Long-term effects of starvation on these rats means an increase in hostile behavior and more interest in getting into homes. A food shortage on rat populations can result in various results. First, they will begin to attack each other for food, then they will begin to disperse, traveling kilometers in search for food and finally if they don’t find food they will die, or begin to invade more homes.

Getting Rid of House Mice

Mice aren’t just annoying, they are disease carrying rodents. A single mice can produce over a hundred offspring in a year and just think off the multiplier when the babies begin breeding. If you are using snap traps, stick pads and poison, all these are not enough to getting rid of those cute adorable mice. The next three steps include sealing off the entry points into the house, cleaning up and decontaminating the house. Mice can squeeze through a gap as small as 6 mm, so if you actually measure 6 mm next to the gap under a door, you’ll see how small it really is. So you need to seal off the cracks, gaps and holes throughout your house. Mice are also attracted to your home because of food crumbs, dry stored products and cotton. So keep food in metal containers or thick plastic containers with tight lids. Every where a mouse has been needs to be decontaminate, surfaces cleaned with bleach solution and all clothing washed, and furniture, rugs and carpet need to be commercial steam cleaned.

Mason Bee Season

Mason bees are a little smaller than a honeybee and blue-black in color, they actually look like a extremely well fed fly. They are very effective pollinators. Solitary bees, the females are the only ones with the ability to sting, with extreme prejudice. In the wild, they lay their eggs in small cavities but are very happy to lay their eggs in man made wooden blocks with holes drilled or cardboard tubes and paper straws- because they don’t  mine their own nesting cavities. Female Mason bees forage for pollen and nectar and pack this food into the far end of their nesting cavity. Then she lays an egg and seals up the cell. This process continues until the bee has filled the entire chamber with a series of pollen/nectar/egg cells – usually for 4-6 weeks. Larvae hatch in a couple days, eat the food and spin a cocoon and pupate. By fall, the insects look like an adult bee, but they remain inside their cocoons throughout the winter.

COVID-19 and Resurgence of Cannibalistic Rats

With Covid 19 in full swing, all restaurants are virtually shut down except for take-out, there is a definitely a lack of scraps for rodents, or more specifically rats. What we are seeing now is rats going into alarm mode and beginning to run every where to look for food. Call out for rat issues has been up by over 200% from this time last year, as rat-free neighborhoods have become flooded with Norway rats romping in the middle of the day. Even worst, the lack of rat food has caused rats to attack each other and go full cannibal holocaust. So it time to start rat proofing your garbage cans as its not just the coons that will be tearing apart your garbage’s.  If your house is not rat proof, its time to get an expert out and seal off all entry points as the next rat black plague is here.

Slugs and Snails

Slugs and snails are soft-bodied animals but snails can withdraw inside their shell and stay alive for several years. Moisture is a key requirement for the two and they both eat plant leaves, flowers, and fruits, particularly those at ground level, causing considerable damage to plants in gardens and flowerbeds. Destructive to flowerbeds and gardens, slugs and snails particularly enjoy eating violets, strawberries, and lettuce. Both slugs and snails lay eggs in the spring and summer. Preventing slugs or snails begins with eliminating their hiding places. Put planters and flower pots onto racks or stands. Remove lumber and stones that can provide a damp hiding place.

Asian Long Horned Bush Ticks

These tick adults look like most other ticks found in our wooded habitats. Unlike most other tick species, the Long Horn adult females can produce viable eggs without mating with a male tick and can produce 1,000 to 2,000 eggs at a time. So if you do the science, a host (a person or animal) could have thousands of ticks on them. They can transmit many pathogens that cause diseases to animals and people. Asian long horned ticks are found in shaded locations, as well as, in open sunny locations like lawns around homes. To avoid Asian long horned tick problems; carefully inspect pets, yourself and wear long pants, high top socks, boots, and long-sleeved shirts as well as using tick repellent.

Hantavirus is back – Just avoid Rodents

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome is spread by contact with rodents and their urine, feces or saliva, and rarely from person-to-person. Lately the news started panic that another viral pandemic is ready to make the rounds. Hantavirus has actually been around for centuries and is most prevalent in China with as many as 100,000 cases a year. Each hantavirus has a specific rodent host species and are named “New World” (North America) and “Old World” (Europe and Asia), both diseases are considered rare, but can be fatal. The rodents shed the virus in their saliva, urine and feces. People can contract the hantavirus if they touch something that has been contaminated by rodents and then touch their nose, eyes, ears or mouth.  Sanitation is key, wear gloves and use disinfection spray to clean all areas rodents have been.

New Orleans is sinking – with Rats

New Orleans rodent control teams are putting poisoned rat bait into sewers and bait boxes on streets throughout the French Quarter because rat food has become scarce due to the coronavirus response. With so many restaurants closed, rats accustomed to getting food out of Smithrite garbage’s are having to forage more widely, and empty streets lined with residential garbage cans are the next source. There are pathogens in the crazy hungry rats that can cause many diseases. The poison used by the rodent control teams is bromadiolone 0.005%, a blood anticoagulant that causes organ failure in rats that have eaten it, it usually takes 5-7 days of feeding to kill off the rats. In New Orleans they have the same crepuscular rats as us here in Delta – the slim tree dwelling roof rats and larger burrowing Norway rats.
