Pantry Moths

Pantry moths (and caterpillars) are small insects found indoors in locations where dried food packages are stored. They are known to cause unpleasant damage to food, spoiling it as it becomes invaded by pantry moths’ larvae. Signs of pantry moth infestations include webbing along the corners of packages or on the product inside, flour or cereal products with an unpleasant odor and sticky secretions that cause grains to clump together. Pantry moth infestations require pesticides to treat an infestation. Cleaning the affected area include vacuuming and scrubbing with water and soap. Infested food must be thrown away, and containers made of glass, tightly sealed metal or hard plastic should be used to store dried panty foods.

Rat Rage and COVID-19

The perfect rodent infestation storm is now upon us, with restaurant at half capacity, heading into the colder months, and an abundance of panic bulk buying food supplies, spike in pet ownership and pet food, and pandemic gardens. Surges in rodent sightings, infestations and populations act as unique effects of COVID-19’s new normal. Rodents, who depend on restaurant and business scraps as their food source are now moving into new neighborhoods and homes. Rodents that are normally nocturnal, are now coming out during the day because they are in survival mode becoming willfully aggressive.

Carpenter Ants – In the Fall and Winter

Carpenter ant infestations usually occur during the months of April and May, then at the beginning of fall, as these ants look for warm and humid homes during the cold winter months. These wood destroying insects have no problem expanding and extending their satellite colonies. Rotting or wet wood is an utter treat for them as this wood is much easier to chew and build with. Old or rotting wood, poor air circulation, leaky roofs, over flowing gutters, cracked stucco and siding, condensation, and access to the soil, are all ideal conditions for these wood tunneling ants to make their homes in and around your house.

Rat Pandemic

Since the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic, there has been a change in where rodents are being seen. As a result of the lack of restaurant garbage and overall business waste due to the corona virus, rodents have moved to residential neighbourhoods with greater than usual waste from ¾ of the population now working and studying from home. Here are some tips to prevent rodents from entering your homes: 1)  Ensure garbage cans are covered and secured tightly. 2) Keep trees and bushes 6 feet away from the home exterior. 3) Seal cracks or holes with caulking or expanding foam and install weather stripping around windows and doors. 4) Inspect the roof, gutter line and soffits for signs of rodent activity.

De-Skunking Your Pet

Skunks are not armed with long claws and nasty teeth like raccoons but their defence mechanism is equally potent. They have a pair of dedicated sacs located in their anus. The sacs are merely pouches that store an extremely foul smelling yellow oil secretion produced by glands that line the sacs. When you or your pet is sprayed by a skunk always de-skunk outside. Most of the materials used in the treatments can usually be found already in your home.

1. Dishwashing liquid, peroxide and baking soda. Mix the 1 cup hydrogen peroxide with a 1/4 cup of baking soda and a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Apply the solution, thoroughly rub it in all over, rinse and repeat. This one works the best – I’ve used it a lot.

2. Shampoo and tomato juice. Lather your pet in their pet shampoo and apply a lot of tomato juice, wait 20 minutes and repeat.

3. Apple cider vinegar and water. Mix two parts water with one part vinegar, apply to pet and wait 5 minutes. Rinse with water and repeat.

Asian Giant Hornet – It’s Here For Good

The Asian giant hornet is the world’s largest hornet and it has been here for over a year, they prefer to live in low mountains and forests, areas that have not too hot summers and mild winters as well as high precipitation. They feed primarily on larger insects, colonies of other cooperative brood care insects (bees), tree sap, and honey from honey bee colonies. The risk to honey bees is extremely high. Now that autumn is here, locating any active hives and eradicate them before they produce queens that can hibernate and come out next year is really important.

Weevil – In Your Home?

Sometimes plant-feeding weevils invade homes for shelter in the fall, gaining access through cracks or openings around the windows, vents and doors. If weevils have been living in the attic or the crawl space and migrate to the living space of a home(that is usually warmer) than this may can confuse weevils and they may act as if it is springtime and then move outdoors. Weevils that come indoors for shelter can infest every room in the house and stored food weevils will head straight to the pantry looking for packages of beans, popcorn, cereal, nuts and fruit. A vacuum cleaner is a quick way to remove weevils from floors, walls and furniture.

Dragonflies a.k.a. Mosquito Hawks

Dragonflies are large flying insects that are considered beneficial. Dragonflies thrive around ponds, pools, streams, and waterfront properties. Dragonflies are not harmful to people as they don’t bite or sting.  Dragonflies are actual beneficial, since the diet of immature dragonflies includes nuisance pests. They eat, mosquito larvae (immature dragonflies called naiads, live in the water), mosquitoes, ants, termites, gnats and other nightly insects. They hover over the water and are often territorial about the breeding site.

Amphipods – Yard Shrimp

These individuals are not insects, but are crustaceans similar to shrimp, using a mechanism called tail flip, propelling themselves away from a predator. They can be both herbivores and carnivores feeding on bacteria and dead plants and animals . They enter homes after heavy rainfall and require an exact amount of moisture to live and too much or too little can be lethal. When outdoor environments become too wet, the pests often move inside seeking drier conditions. Unfitting weather stripping provides easy access. Treatment of the yard shrimp can be as easy as drying out moist habitats.

House Spiders – What to do?

Do you squish spiders when they see them indoors or trap the eight-legged insects and release them outside? Is this outdoor relocation an act of kindness, or a death sentence for the spider? If the spider is native to the area then it will likely be able to survive outside, but if the spider is a transplant it will likely perish outside because spiders are adapted to specific humidity and temperatures. Apparently even species that are moved from one climate to a comparable one seem to have trouble. So if you see a spider tiptoe across your bedroom move it to another part of your house where you don’t mind spiders, such as the car garage. If you want to see fewer spiders indoors fill the gaps and cracks in your house with caulk or weather stripping.
