Integrated Pest Management or IPM – as the techies like to say

IPM is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on the prevention of pests or their damage through the techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties. IPM is a process we use to solve pest problems while minimizing risk. Using IPM around your home and property creates conditions unfavorable for pests. So here is the break-down:

  1. Exclusion or elimination of all possible entry points to your house.

 2. The use of snap traps or live traps

 3. Remove harborage – the shelter or protection for pests

 4. Remove food sources such as bird feeders, compost piles, pet food and  fruit on the ground

 5. The use of chemicals in the safest possible manner

The Bold Zebra Jumping Spiders – That’s a Thing?

Jumping spiders are the largest family of spiders, more than 5,000 species. Here in Delta we have the Bold and Zebra jumping spiders. These spiders’ behaviors are different from those of your average spider as they stalk and pounce on their prey, usually at night. They do build spider several webs but there used for shelter and protection. When threatened, they prefer is to flee rather than to stay and fight so being bitten by a jumping spider is very rare. Since jumping spiders are venomous, if bitten the site will be itchy, swell, and even develop a few blisters. If you don’t know if it was a jumping spider then it may have been a black widow, brown recluse, or hobo spider, so its not a bad idea to see your doctor.

Rat and Mouse Prevention Tips

Rodent season is here in full bloom so here are some tips to try and prevent them from coming in your home. Rats & mice are attracted to sources of water, food & shelter. Outside conditions that attract rodents are your garbage, outdoor grills and cooking areas, and the big one – bird feeders. Having clutter in your yard also can provide shelter for the rodents such as firewood, construction materials and junk piles. Rats burrow tunnels under all these things so keep as much “stuff” away from your house by as much as 15 meters. Inside your house, keep your kitchen clean, no dirty dishes on the countertop and clean up any spilled food immediately. Panty items and pet food should be kept in plastic containers with lids. Be sure to seal up all gaps inside & outside of your house.

Asian Murder Hornets

These terrifyingly huge Asian giant hornets have recently raise their notorious twitter profile. They can grow up to five centimeters in length and emit a loud noise that is impossible to ignore. They will attack anything nearby if they perceive it as a threat to their nest. They aren’t a threat to most people as you would need to be stung a couple hundred times for your life to be threatened or allergic to them. The hornet’s sting has been compared to being stabbed a scorching hot needle and the pain linger for a couple days. But the real concern about these flying assassins is that it only takes 30 murder hornets to wipe out an entire colony of honey bees, daily.

So no to an Ant Invasion

Ants are bothersome because they can make us uncomfortable in so many ways. It’s in your best interests as a homeowner to keep ants as far away from your home as possible. Listed below are some tips that should help with that. Seal any potential entry points the ants may be getting in, this has an extra benefit as it helps with temperature regulation and energy efficiency in your home. Clean and maintain your home regularly thus making it unwelcoming to ants. Cut back overhanging shrub and tree branches close to your home by six feet, as those branches may direct the ants to spots where they can easily access your home and you will never know. Use peppermint oil to keep the ants at bay, plus it smell great.

Carpenter Ants – the House killer

Carpenter ants are talented at destroying your home from the inside out. They dig through the wood inside your walls in order to create a network of tunnels and establish satellite nests. Ninety percent of the time, carpenter ants build nests in areas where the wood is moist or rotting. Because of that, you will commonly find their nests located in areas around your home where there is or was water damage such as the bathroom, kitchen, external walls or underneath your roof. Carpenter ants compromise the structural integrity of your home. They are not as active in late fall but if you see one it’s highly likely that they have built a nest inside your home.

Spiders and Arachnophobia

Arachnophobia is an intense and irrational fear of spiders, we all have it.  Spiders commonly found in Delta homes include house spiders, wolf spiders, cellar spiders, fishing spiders, and black widow spiders. They are usually found in corners of rooms, closets, boxes, dark crevices and basements.  Spiders are common in homes in the fall during their mating season. Spiders have their purpose outdoor but not in your home. The best solution to spider control is prevention. If a spider is inside your home, it’s looking for food, mate or following other insects inside. To keep spiders outside where they belong: clean your house regularly, vacuum often and  prevent clutter.

Mice – Shy Parents mean shy offspring?

The success of eliminating mice may depend on the personality of specific animals within a species. Braver, more lively, destructive or social mice are more likely to use baits, traps or new objects and foods. As a result, they can be eradicated quickly. But, shyer or less energetic mice can take longer to be caught. So, mice that actively avoid eradication will breed and repopulate. Bold mice don’t necessarily produce bold offspring, nor shy mice, shy offspring. As it turns out, like us humans, the next generation of mice produce a broad spectrum of personality.

Robo Cockroach

Cockroaches are insects that have flat oval-shaped, spiny legs, wings (but they don’t fly) with a pair of long antennae and six long. They thrive in filthy kitchens and left unchecked, they multiple and turn everything into a nightmare. But what if they can be controlled and turned into house maids. Hence the robo cockroach, a cockroach no bigger than a large paper clip can scurries across the floor controlled by Wi-Fi – it’s a robot-roach hybrid, a hardwired biological insect – a cyborg if you will. The robo cockroach can be controlled wirelessly moving back and forth, left or right through microstimulation in the antenna nerves. Soon we all may have these cockroaches cleaning are houses, parked in the robovac stall waiting for instructions.

Ants

The Ant has become the number one pest problem in B.C.  Ants can come in through even the smallest cracks, seeking water and food in the kitchen pantry or storeroom areas. Ants leave an invisible chemical path which contains pheromones for others to follow once they detect the food source. They can nest about anywhere in and around your house; in lawns, under driveways, foundations, walls, and stumps etc. Worker ants may live days to several years and the queen may live as long as 20 years. Most retail “diy” ant control approaches only kill the ants you see. Only truly effective ant specific treatments can penetrate and destroy nests to help prevent these pests from returning. So toss out those white ant tins – they are only feeding the ants.
