Winter Bugs

So where are all those bugs go in winter, being cold-blooded insects are particularly vulnerable to cold temperatures. They have several different ways of surviving through the year’s coldest months: migration, hibernation and overwintering. A lot of crop pests migrate to warmer temperatures in the winter and return in the spring. Many insects hibernate through the winter months, but it only the  adult such as bees, lady bugs, wasps, cockroaches, and some butterflies. And finally, some bugs in certain stages of their lifecycle (larvae, nymphs, pupae, or eggs) can overwinter through the cold months.

Termites – Yikes

When looking for termites you should look for termite wings, straight antennae, dead termites and worm-like mud tunnels that are visible on the surface of walls. They are commonly found by doors, window frames, walls, and baseboards. To eliminate termites, create a barrier around your house using a liquid termiticide and termite bait that will spread throughout the whole colony of termites. Also, try to eliminate any wood to ground contact in your house or cellulose-based debris around your house.

Covid Vacation – Bed Bug Guide

If Covid isn’t at the top of your concerns while traveling, bed bugs sure should be when staying at a hotel or a rented room. Bed bugs live off blood as their only source of food. Female bed bugs need blood to produce eggs and to mature through several stages in their life. Beds and couches are the areas they hang out in, so the first thing you want to check is the bed linens looking for small blood stains or bed bug feces which will look like tiny brown dots. It’s imperative to do a systematic search through all the creases in the linen and the mattress/box spring itself. Some other areas where these pests hide are the nightstands, behind the headboard, closets and furniture near the bed.

House Fly – Free

Flies can carry billions of harmful microorganisms spreading over 60 diseases like conjunctivitis, dysentery, tuberculosis, and typhoid fever. And, all they have to do is land on surface like your dinner, cooking utensils or cutlery to do this. House flies like to feed on rotting liquid substances, where they pick-up other bacteria and viruses. But for solid food, flies regurgitate a liquid consisting of saliva and digestive juices that they vomit on it turning it into a liquid (then they defecate). Eliminating the food and breeding source is the key to getting rid of flies, so clean up food messes, disinfect food prep areas, clean drains and pipes regularly and take the garbage out often.

Pantry Pests and your Kitchen

The kitchen and pantry can be a breeding ground for common pests (weevils, beetles, ants and moths) because there not always the cleanest place in the house. Sugar, flour, oats and other dried foods are often spilled and these things attract bugs. The first thing to do is remove all dried food stuffs from the pantry and kitchen. Throw away items that have been infiltrated and give the shelves a detailed cleaning. All dry goods including cereals, flour, sugar, rice, pasta etc. should be stored in thick walled containers with tight-closing lids. Standard maintenance like cleaning the pantry regularly, not purchasing bulk bins dried foods and using pantry pest traps will help avoid panty pests.

Yuck! Rats and Mice

Now that the weather is cooler, rodents a.k.a. pesky little creatures become even more problematic as they try to find warmth, food and shelter. Here are some tips to keep your home rodent free starting with examining your house inside and out. Look for entry points including cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes or electrical wire, vents, attic louvers, and air vents, weather-stripping around doors and windows. Next, put bait stations around the exterior of the home to monitor and slay any rodents. Signs of a rodent infestation include: damaged food packaging, gnaw marks on walls and furniture, rodent feces and grease marks on walls.

Christmas Tree – B U G S !

There are thousands of bugs living in a single Christmas tree that continue to breed and multiply, even after the tree has been removed from your house. These bugs include flies (many different ones) spiders and mites, aphids, bark beetles and sawflies – all carrying germs. Eggs maybe hatching and bugs multiplying right now – potentially leaving a significant bug infestation to deal with in the next couple months or at least until treated. These bugs that normally lay dormant during the cold months, spring to life once the tree is in your house. Beside dropping needles, your tree will also be dropping live bugs, so always have your vacuum at the ready. Inspect your tree with a flashlight for bugs and eggs.

Pest-Control Myths

Myths are folklore consisting of narratives that play a fundamental role in tales. It the same thing in pest control, dealing with bugs, rodents, and other unwanted critters. I still hear people saying that they saw a rat the size of a cat…Here are a few debunked pest control myths.

  • I’m not too worried about such and such pest, they’ll go away on their own. Nothing goes away on its own, its usually the beginning and they’ve probably settling for the long haul.
  • Many people like the simple solution of rodenticides for rats and mice. But, the rodents will die some where and leave that nasty smell and carrion flies for weeks.
  • Cheese is not the attractant that mice like, rather its sweeter foods that are high in carbohydrates like peanut butter.
  • Cats and dogs will not keep away rodents and other pests, as they are unmotivated to hunt and eradicate bugs and rodents because they’re so well nourished. Pet foods actually attract pests.
  • Having pests is a sign of a dirty home, well yes and no. We have treated brand new homes for ants and rodents long before people have moved in.
  • Sugar ants can be eradicated with those white ant pucks, Lysol, ant-out, or any other retail product.. NO, you need a professional for these ants.
  • Daddy longlegs are harmless creatures. Period!
  • Bedbugs prefer darkness, but anytime of the day they’ll bite you.

Carpet Beetles and their Larvae

The carpet beetle has the unique ability to break down keratin protein, so they can feed on upholstery, furniture, clothing, and of course carpets. The presence of carpet beetles in our homes can lead to allergic reactions like asthma because of the molted skin that larvae shed. If you have seen a few small ladybug looking insects in your home, they are most likely carpet beetles. They leave holes in your clothes, upholstery and carpets. The bulk of the damage is caused by the larvae which are nesting in the relative safety offered by the dark spaces behind closed doors, upholstered furniture, beneath carpeting and at the edges of walls and floorings. Regular vacuuming of the rugs, carpets, and upholstery is all that it takes to keep carpet beetles in check.

Ah Rats – Prevention Tips:

As it cools off, masses of vermin begin their search for warmer spaces where they can hunker down for winter. So rodent season is in full bloom now so here are some tips to try and prevent them from getting into your home. One of the chief issues we find in attracting these pests is your trash. The smell of the garbage attracts rodents to your property and all rodents can jump up as high as a meter to get at the top of a garbage can, so make sure your trash has tightly closed lids. Another thing that attracts rodents (mice, rats and squirrels) is your outdoor bbq, smoker & cooking areas. Make sure to keep them clean and free of grease. Bird feeders are another rodent attractant so be sure to keep the ground beneath the feeder seed free.
