The weather is cooling down and that means it will be the time for rodents to get out of the wet and cold and find shelter, so here are some simple preventive measures for potential mouse and rat problems.

Lower mainland Rats

There are two common rats in the southwest area of B.C., both sociable animal and found around food sources. First there is the Norway rat that burrows in the ground and is generally around crawl spaces, attics, clutter, woodpiles, garbage, and piles of debris. Then there’s the roof rat that likes to climb and tends to live in trees, roofs or attics. So how do we get rid of rats? Rats are very adaptable animals, as long as there is food and water they can live in almost every location. The most important thing is to cut off their food sources, then reduce all clutter in and around your house. If they are getting into your home then removing the rats entry points is important, called exclusion. And finally, to eliminate them we use rodenticides, snap traps, live traps and tracking power.

Mosquito Season Is Over, Right?

Everyone recognizes that distinctive buzz and the sting of a mosquito. They are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale and components of our perspiration. When considering mosquito season, you need to consider the weather zone we live in and therefore, Delta is particularly vulnerable to mosquito season in summer and into the fall. So when do mosquitoes go away? Only when the weather begins to cool down will the mosquitoes begin to start looking for a place to hide and hibernate. But some mosquitoes can appear again if there are unexpected warm spells during winter. If mosquito’s are still bugging you use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, protect your house with barriers, don’t leave stagnant water around and avoid gathering where mosquitoes are.

Rodent Control in Delta

Delta homes are overrun by rodents like rats, mice, and squirrels every year. Various types and species are common in Delta, especially rats often called the rats of Delta. Rodents cause great damage, spread diseases and disease-causing parasites, and create havoc to homes because we have the perfect subtropical climate making it a ideal environment for them to mate and multiply. They chew your walls, electricals, insulation, and any wooden structures in your home and can cause thousands of dollars in repairs only. When you find droppings, gnawed or chewed materials or foul smell from rodent urine around your home, in the crawl space or attic it is a sign of an infestation.

Green Pest Control Results that Actually Work

Regrettably, when pests are detected in our houses, apartments, or office buildings, their existence can lead to grave problems for the people who live or work there.  Non-toxic extermination has become more readily available to retail customers but it really dependents on the type of pest you’re dealing with. Here are a few things you can do that actually work.

Mice and Rats – live traps are a human way to go. Catch and release – as long as it’s along ways away from your house.

Flying Insects –  most flying insects are attracted to UV light, so a UV light trap with sticky paper is the ticket. uses UV lighting and a fan to draw pests like mosquitoes in and trap them on powerful sticky paper.

Fruit Flies – an effective fruit fly trap is merely a small cup with apple cider vinegar and cellophane wrapped over with small holes punched into the top.

Ants – retail stores are loaded with all kinds of ant gels, powders and sprays that at the best of times are a means to slow down the occurrence of ants.

Silverfish – the only green way to get rid of silverfish is using dehumidifiers, under 50% moisture content silverfish can’t survive.

Cool Facts about Bees, Wasps and Flies

While gathering food, a bee may fly up to 100 km per day. A honeybee colony can produce around 100 kg of honey each year. Honeybees make around  9 million trips to gather enough nectar for production of ½ a kg of honey. Hornets and wasps feeding on fermenting juice have been known to get “drunk’ and pass out. A wasp’s wings beat over 200 times a second. Houseflies find sugar with their feet which are 1 million times more complex than human tongues. Fruit flies were the first living creatures to be sent into space and they do push-ups to attract a mate.

Third Murder Hornet nest of 2021 found near Delta

A third murder hornet nest was eradicated after a hornet was tracked to a
tree neither the Canadian US border. They discovered as many as 1,400
hornets in nine layers of comb, where hornets were found in various
developmental stages. Murder hornets considered to be invasive species and
are the largest hornets in the world, measuring up to 5 cm. They got their
moniker for being the cause of dozens of deaths per year in Japan. Asian
giant hornets have mandibles shaped like spiked shark fins and in their
“slaughter phase” they attack bee hives, decapitate the bees and flying away
with the thoraxes to feed their young. The hornet’s also have potent venom
and stinger that is  long enough to puncture a beekeeping suit.

How to Get Rid of Wasps and Hornets in September

As temperatures consistently exceed of 23 degrees, you may be seeing an increased presence of wasps and hornets in Delta during the late summer and early fall. Here are a few basic steps to get rid of those insects. While there’s not a specific silver bullet to altogether remove wasps and hornets on your property, here are a few practical steps you can take to prevent a run-in with the venomous stinging pests. Always cover sweet beverages like soda and juice when you are outdoors, garbage cans that are outside should have a tight-fitting lids and clean out accumulated grease in your BBQ. Make sure your windows and door screens are sufficiently sealed. Since wasp and hornet live in nests that can hold around 2,000, it’s not enough to kill only a few to get rid of the nest, so skip the retail counter when looking for a cure to your stinging friends and call a pro. BTW, don’t use bleach, ammonia or gas as these are extremely dangerous and you may just push the nest deeper into your home.
