Blame the ‘impressive fire ant’ Delta

Last summer, several planes hit birds feeding on the fire ants at YVR, forcing a series of short runway closures.

And the pest problem is no longer confined to the common European fire ant.

“We’re talking of two different types of fire ants,” noting both fire ants appear to be on the move. “We’ve got them in virtually every municipality.”

We’ve got them in virtually every municipality

Higgins has been conducting surveys of known fire ant infestations and doing random sampling throughout southwestern B.C. to assess the extent of these tiny aggressive insects, which possess a painful sting and swarm very quickly when disturbed.

The investigation initially focused on the European fire ants, which spread naturally over short distances by budding off new colonies in which a queen and a group of worker ants leave a nest to form a new colony.

But it wasn’t until later that fall — after a call from Vancouver International Airport’s wildlife program — that Higgins started researching the impressive fire ant.

Airport officials were worried about a spate of collisions between small birds, mostly barn sparrows, and planes on the runway during July and August, which forced them to close the runway for five to eight minutes each time to clear away the mess.

“They wanted to know what they’d been eating,” Higgins said. “I looked at their gut contents and they were full of impressive fire ants. They’d been eating a lot of them, especially the winged queens.”.

Fire ants are difficult to control or eradicate, even with pesticides.

Higgins acknowledged the impressive fire ant is “just emerging as an invasive species here” and while he and Bradbeer are looking at running an experiment at YVR to control the ants, he expects it could take a year to get the permits.

Darryl Dyck CP has been fighting a scorched-earth campaign against the fire ants along the Arbutus Corridor rail line that runs from False Creek to the Fraser River in Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Pacific Railway, which is tearing up its tracks along the Arbutus corridor on Vancouver’s westside, has been incinerating the soil along the tracks and said it will now also burn the rail ties to ensure the ants aren’t transported to another location.

“I just got confirmation we will incinerate the ties in that whole area,” said CP spokesman Jeremy Berry, noting the move will likely happen next week.

Although Higgins has yet to tally the numbers he has collected through his research, in the past four years, the ants have been introduced to at least 25 locations on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland through the movement of landscaping materials, soil and potted plants.

He noted the most common areas for fire ants tend to be Vancouver, Delta and Chilliwack, but they were recently spotted in West Vancouver, Burnaby and handful of spots in the District of North Vancouver.

Randy Bilesky Talks about rodents getting into your Car

Do to continue Government pressures, north American car companies are “going green” by using biodegradable components to build their cars. Unfortunately for many car owners this has come at a cost: the expensive repair bill resulting from rodents chewing the wire coatings and other electrical parts under the hood!

Randy Bilesky of Go Green Pest Control in Delta talks about rats getting under the hood and what preventative measures car owners can take to stop it.

Randy’s Recommendations:

1) Place a bag of moth balls in the engine compartment and interior of the vehicle.

2) Spray a hot pepper based spray around the vehicle and the engine.

3) Obtain an electronic pest deterrent sonic noise maker like the Ultrasonic Rodent Repeller Commercial Triple Speaker Model Repels Rodents, Rats & Mice. By Innovative Rodent Repeller

4) Live rodent traps

5) Do not place bait stations near the vehicle as the rodent may use your vehicle as a final resting place.

Keeping Pests Away

All the wet weather and now the warming season are going to bring the bugs out.

Pesticide applications need to have a target pest. In most situations, that means treating cracks, crevices and voids where the pests live. That is how it should be done. Some labels give the authority to spray baseboards and other areas, but in reality, that is only proper if a house or business is totally infested and spraying baseboards will actually kill some of the target pests, usually ants.

Don’t leave any debris lying around the house. This is a good hiding place for ants, silverfish and moths. If you have firewood, stack it away from the house as it will attract black widows. If you don’t want bugs in your firewood, stack it where there is a lot of sunlight and then drape some black plastic over it. The heat from the sun on the black plastic will discourage anything from hiding in the firewood.

When you have branches touching the house or roof, it will allow pharoah  house ants and carpenter ants access. You should trim them back and keep them from touching your home during the warm months. Also, you should sweep down any spider webs anywhere around the outside of the house. These procedures will help keep pests at a bare minimum and will not endanger your family, your pets or your environment. Go G

Where are all the Wasp / Hornets this Year?

The number of wasps and hornets is really down from what we normally see this time of summer. At this point in late June, wasps are typically a common sight and nuisance. This year, however, the wasp and hornet population is hardly noticeable. The cool wet spring weather has not been favorable to their survival, as the emerging hibernating queens need to forage for food and build nests causing a high mortality rate. Wasps are a key predator protecting plants life and crops from millipedes, flies, caterpillars, aphids, and much more.

What you can do after your house is sprayed for insects.

Eliminating insects takes a lot of time and effort for it to be successfully done. After every application of pesticides, you always want to clean your home, but you should be patient before cleaning. Sometimes you have to wait a week or 3 weeks before you can clean your home so that pesticides will work on the target pests. Some pests take time before they come out of their hiding places when sprayed. Keep the house dry as possible. For cleaning use rubber gloves, face masks, water, dishwashing soap, vacuum cleaner, trash bags, sponges or rags and a steam cleaner. So you will need to find a starting point, clean the floors, wipe walls and windows, steam and vacuum furniture.

Wood-Boring Beetles

These beetles are hard to control because you’ll find the damage from the infestation when its done. They destroy furniture, buildings, and homes. Unless you know the signs, they’ll slowly eat away at wood for months and even years. The two signs of a wood-boring beetle infestation are wood powder, holes, tunnels and stained or blistered wood. Some wood-boring beetles will create an audible clicking sound as they chew through wood. These insects prefer moisture in the wood they attack, so buy kiln-dried wood.

When do wasps and bees fly

Wasps and bees are unable to feed their nests if they cannot collect nectar and protein, and if the temperature is 12 degrees Celsius  or less foragers cannot fly. Cool night temperatures prevent them from flying at night and if the they do they usually fly towards lighted windows at night. They can generally fly in a drizzle, mist, or light rain but if drops of water accumulate on their bodies, it weighs them down and affects their flying ability. Water does not soak these stinging beasts due to its surface tension.

For every one ant you see there is another hundred or a thousand ants near by. So How do you get rid of carpenter ants permanently? “The most effective way to get rid of carpenter ants is to find the nest and destroy it, and the most common places to find carpenter ant nests include hollow doors, window sills, roof areas, and wall voids.” No ! No ! No! Finding the main nest which is outdoors is very difficult and the nests in the house are satellite nest found in wet rotting wood. A combination of detective work and commercial insecticides are the only way to rid your home of Carpenter ants.

Yuck Flies on my Food – Should you chuck it out?

Houseflies can carry a lot of different infectious germs because they eat and lay their eggs in feces, decomposing flesh, and other putrefying matters. These germs stick to many areas of flies as they feed and reproduce. Flies also use regurgitating enzymes from their bodies to break down their food into a fluid that they suck up. So if you see a fly land on your food, do you toss it out? I do – but there is no firm indication that flies transmit pathogens through food that people consume. But again, a growing fly population in your house may result in people getting sick i.e. diarrhea. So if you see one fly land on your food – you should be okay, but if there is a horde of flies pecking at your food, toss it.
