Carpet beetles are small household pests that can cause significant damage to carpets, clothing, rugs, upholstery and other natural-fibre materials. In coastal British Columbia, varied carpet beetles are particularly common.
While adult carpet beetles are generally harmless to people, their larvae are responsible for most of the damage.
What Do Carpet Beetles Look Like?
Adult carpet beetles are very small, usually only a few millimetres long. They may be black, brown or mottled with lighter colours.
The larvae are easier to recognize. They are typically:
- Brown or dark coloured
- Covered in fine hairs
- Elongated or carrot-shaped
- Sometimes striped or banded
You may also find shed larval skins, which are an important sign of an infestation.
What Do Carpet Beetles Eat?
Despite their name, carpet beetles don’t only eat carpets. Larvae can feed on natural materials and organic debris such as:
- Wool carpets and clothing
- Rugs and upholstery
- Blankets and fabrics
- Fur and feathers
- Pet and human hair
- Lint and dead insects
This means carpet beetles can be a problem even in homes without carpet.
Signs of Carpet Beetles
Watch for:
- Small beetles around windows and light sources
- Hairy larvae under furniture or along baseboards
- Shed larval skins
- Small holes or damage in clothing and fabrics
- Activity around closets, rugs and upholstered furniture
Carpet beetle larvae often hide in dark, undisturbed areas, making an infestation easy to miss.
Where Do They Hide?
Common hiding areas include:
- Under carpets and rugs
- Along carpet edges
- Under furniture and beds
- Inside closets
- Around baseboards
- In upholstered furniture
- Around vents and ducts
- In storage areas
- Near old bird or wasp nests
How to Prevent Carpet Beetles
Regular cleaning can help reduce the conditions carpet beetles need to survive.
Vacuum regularly, especially along baseboards, under furniture, inside closets and around carpets and upholstery.
Remove hair and lint from floors, furniture and pet areas.
Inspect stored clothing and fabrics, especially wool and other natural fibres.
Check second-hand furniture, rugs and clothing before bringing them into your home.
Inspect exterior areas for old bird or wasp nests that may provide a source of beetle activity.
Professional Carpet Beetle Control
If carpet beetles keep returning, simply vacuuming visible insects may not be enough. Larvae can remain hidden in flooring, furniture, closets and other protected areas.
Go Green Pest Control can help identify:
- The type of carpet beetle
- Where larvae are developing
- Potential food sources
- Hidden harbourage areas
- Possible sources of recurring activity
Professional treatment can then be combined with cleaning and prevention recommendations to help eliminate the problem.
Do Carpet Beetles Bite?
No. Carpet beetles do not bite people. However, some people can experience skin irritation from contact with the tiny hairs associated with carpet beetle larvae.
