Indoors, regular house cleaning should provide suitable spider control but here are a few measures for keeping the spiders out: lots of vacuuming, prevent clutter buildup, remove spiders and spider webs outside, and spiders found indoors – squash them or capture them and release them outdoors.

Rodents

Rodents, rats and mice, invade homes in search of food, water, and shelter (protection). Rodents are for the most part nocturnal, and/or crepuscular (active at twilight), and they can chew through soffits, fascia, siding and other areas to get up into the attic, crawlspace and any where in the house. Rodents are known for chewing because their teeth are constantly growing. They particularly like chewing through home electrical wires, plastic and metal pipes, as well as many other things in your home. Their feces and urine are also a concern, as it can cost thousands of dollars to clean it up and make the home healthy again. Acrobat ants are a nuisance ant with the unique ability to hold their heart-shaped abdomens up over the rest of their bodies. This gymnastic exhibition happens when the individual or nest is disturbed, they then release a foul-smelling odor. Acrobat ants contaminate food and can strip insulation from around wires, potentially causing short-circuits. Power wires, tree branches, and shrubs provide easy access to your home’s exterior then in the foundation, windows and doors, and in holes along the roofline. They like out-of-the-way areas near high moisture or fungal growth to nest such as behind walls, in structural wood, under floors, and inside crawlspaces. Pill bugs, a.k.a. roly-polies, get their nickname from a defensive habit of rolling into a ball when distressed. Although they are called bugs, they are actually land-dwelling crustaceans, yes like shrimp or lobsters. Pill bugs prosper in humid and wet climates like wet wood, mulch, water pipes and damp basements. These insects can infest homes by sneaking through open doors, garage door, basements and crawl spaces. These land bound crayfish are scavengers feeding on decaying plants, grass clippings, trash and even pet droppings.

Fleas are external parasites that feed on the blood of their hosts as their sole source of food, using specialized mouthparts to pierce the skin. The most common flea living throughout the lower mainland is the cat flea. Cat fleas feed on a variety of animal hosts – including people! Many people are allergic to flea saliva and will develop itchy dermatitis. Due to excessive itching, flea bites can sometimes lead to a secondary infection that requires medical treatment. Fleas also transmit tapeworm to people and pets, and cause anemia.  which can make them weak and ill.

Our local moles have large paddle-like front feet used for digging tunnels as long as one kilometer a day. Although they may be virtually blind, they have amazingly sophisticated senses of touch and smell. These insect eating machines can cause considerable damage to lawns with dirt mounds and tunnels that damaged plant roots and create spongy lawns. Although they like grubs and insects their main food source is earthworms. Moles can rapidly inhabit and spread from one property to the next and the larger tunnel network the harder it is to control. Moles may briefly leave your lawn but when you least expect it they’re back. Over-watering lawns can bring soil insects closer to the surface and you can guess where the moles will be. Trapping is the only real way to control moles and the sooner the better.

Raccoons invade your property in search of food, water and shelter. Trapping a raccoon in a live trap is a humane way to remove one of these damaging animals from your property. The best live traps for raccoons are large to extra-large in size. Most traps come in either 1 or 2-door models from which you can choose: The 1-Door is favored by professionals and better bait protection, easier for larger animals to fully enter trap. 2-Door: dual entry provides higher catch rate, ability to see through trap calms cautious animals. Place your trap in an area where you’ve seen raccoon damage, or in an area where a raccoon may live like: attics, porches, mulch beds, sheds, woodpiles etc. Raccoons prefer sweet foods like marshmallows or watermelon. Be sure to place the bait so the raccoon must fully enter the trap to reach it and raccoons can knock over a trap in attempt to steal the bait.

Pantry moths (and caterpillars) are small insects found indoors in locations where dried food packages are stored. They are known to cause unpleasant damage to food, spoiling it as it becomes invaded by pantry moths’ larvae. Signs of pantry moth infestations include webbing along the corners of packages or on the product inside, flour or cereal products with an unpleasant odor and sticky secretions that cause grains to clump together. Pantry moth infestations require pesticides to treat an infestation. Cleaning the affected area include vacuuming and scrubbing with water and soap. Infested food must be thrown away, and containers made of glass, tightly sealed metal or hard plastic should be used to store dried panty foods.
