Our evening skies are filled with these tender, enigmatic, flying mammals coming in all sizes, from the 2 gram Bumblebee bat to the 1.4 kg. Flying Fox. These highly sociable animals are nocturnal, they have fur, bear live young and the mothers suckle their pups. Each bat colony has its own language to communicate with. Bats are not blind- in fact they have excellent vision but use echolocation to find their prey in the dark. Bats are not dirty, disease-carrying flying rats rather this winged marvels constantly groom, combing themselves using the claws on their front wing or hind feet. Bats are extremely cautious around human beings and tend to keep their distance. There are 3 species of bats that feed on blood i.e. vampires but they only bite into large animals like cattle, they actually make a small bite in the skin and licking the blood from the wound. True rabies has never been found in bats.

So are moths dangerous to humans and pets, and the answer is yes. Their feces and cocoons can taint food causing illness and touching infested food or fabrics can trigger an allergic reaction. Moths usually damage clothes, fabrics or carpets but it’s actually their larvae that do all the damage. A moth infestation can grow very rapidly and they can also spread through cracks, holes or crevices. They can scamper across all surfaces and spread throughout a home very quickly. To prevent a population explosion, you need to eliminate the larvae. Moths reproduce very quickly, so use moth traps to catch the adults, vacuum regularly and launder all clothes in the infected area.

It starts with a clatter in the attic and then it sounds like there is a cat doing cart wheels, yes these are the sounds of a squirrel invasion. At least these rodents are active during the day and quiet in the night, unlike rats. With temperatures dropping in the lower mainland, the squirrels will try to take shelter in your warm attic, bringing with them their bounty of nuts. These guys are capable of chewing wooden siding, soffits, vents and cedar shingles, and their end game is to make a nest for kits in the spring. Squirrel are extremely common here, as we all know, but the reality is that every month is actually squirrel season here. These over sized rats can do a lot of damage in a short period of time with their formidable teeth, as they like to make their entry holes as large as possible and they need to keep they teeth short. If you attempting to blocking off any squirrel entrance holes, keep in mind that a squirrel trapped inside a house will get out – sometimes right through drywall into your house.

Silverfish have been around for over 400 million years, making them one of the oldest species of insects to crawl the earth. Its name derives from the animal’s silvery light grey colour, combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements. Silverfish are night-time creatures and are extremely sensitive to light. They prefer damp, high humidity conditions such as sinks, attics, kitchens, and damp basements. Many times people will find silverfish in sinks and bathtubs as a result of falling from a exhaust fan and not being able to climb out of the slippery surface of the sink or tub.

House flies are responsible for transmitting at least 65 harmful diseases and many skin and eye infections through indirect paths. They also transmit food-borne pathogens and their related toxin and resistance. House flies are known to carry and spread: cholera, conjunctivitis, dysentery, gastroenteritis, salmonellosis, tuberculosis, typhoid fever and many more due to their feeding and breeding habits. House flies will often feed on rotting or decaying material, as well as feces. You can catch their transmitted disease by eating or drinking food that a house fly has regurgitated, defecated, urinated, or landed on. And, you can catch their transmitted disease by using contaminated cooking or eating utensils and cutlery. The prevention of flies their diseases can be done by taking some practical actions to eliminate flies in your home.

Now that we are in the colder wet months, mice will have been taking up shelter in homes to find food and warmth. If something seems out of place or there are small dark brown pieces of rice scattered around your kitchen, you’ll need to identify a budding problem and eliminate it before it becomes an plague. Encountering mice droppings, is a horrifying discovery, but even worse are the serious health issues associated with the presence of mice. Mice can produce almost 100 fresh droppings a night. They are 3-8mm in length and a dark shiny colour scattered randomly. Hantavirus (respiratory disease) is one of the most common diseases associated with mice droppings and urine, by touching the urine or dropping or inhaling their dust. Another nasty mouse-borne viral infection is Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis, this infection can lead to serious nerve issues. The first step in getting rid of mice droppings is to get rid of the mice… (contact a pro). To clean up any urine and droppings, wear gloves and use a disinfectant or a mixture of bleach and water.

These insect are mainly a nuisance pest but they do consume a diet rich in polysaccharides such as starch, cellulose and sugars found in books, wallpaper, paintings, clothes, dust, and kitchen and pantry’s. They are known to moult their entire adult lifespan, shedding their exoskeleton over 70 times and their exoskeleton can cause an allergic reaction. To get rid of silverfish use a dehumidifier, vacuum a lot and get a professional in to assess the situation.

The most obvious characteristic of these ants is the smell of rotten lemony coconut that is released when they are crushed. These insects create nests in wall or floor voids and you will see foraging worker ants and or winged mating ants. They enter homes looking for food, preferring confections and dried products, and are likely to contaminate all the food they come into contact with. Kitchen pantries and cupboards are areas these ants prefer to build their nests near, especially if it is warm and moisture is near at hand. These ants are one of our local ants that actually bite. Should you experience odorous ants, its highly recommended not to use liquid and aerosol insecticide products because this likely will scatter the workers and create more nesting sites. As the fall is ending, mice have been looking for accommodations and food for their existence in the following chilly wets months. Mice are pretty fascinating individuals (although I don’t like them- at all) and here are some fascinating realities about the cousin to the rat. Mice can breed year-round with one female able to produce over 60 babies in a year. These omnivorous creatures will pretty much eat anything they can get. Mice have the astonishing skill to squash their bodies which allows them to jam themselves through openings as small as 5mm- roughly the diameter of a pen, so thoroughly inspect your house for any infinitesimal holes and gaps. Mice have really poor vision so they rely on touch, smell and hearing to navigate their world. Their teeth grow at the rate of 0.5mm in 24 hours so they need to continuously chew on everything to keep their teeth short. A mouse’s hearing is a lot better then ours as they can hear up to 100kHz (sound good). Mice are also know to jump pretty high – over a half a meter.

It’s that time again to do some preventative action to the outside of your house to help prevent rodents and other pests from wanting to get into your house this winter. You should not be surprised how much the outdoors can impact your life inside as landscaping techniques can ward off rodents and insects from coming inside. By keeping trees and shrubs trimmed at least a 3 feet away from the house, this can prevent easy access for rats and trim back a total of 6 feet for squirrels. If you use mulch for landscaping to prevent loss of water by evaporation, promote soil productivity, and keep weeds down, all kinds of pests like to use the insulating properties of mulch as a temporary home, so turn it at least once a season to disrupt their activity. Never put mulch next to the foundation, as well. If you are storing firewood, it’s important to check firewood properly before bringing it inside, all kinds of pests maybe lurking inside the wood. Also, stored firewood off the ground by a couple inches and keep it as dry as possible as carpenter ants will turn it into sawdust. If plants are brought indoors to protect them from frost, carefully inspect them for spiders and other insects.
